Yesterday Amazon unveiled its new Amazon Key service, a combination web-connected camera and smart door lock that allows Prime members to have their packages placed safely inside their homes, instead of left on the front stoop to be stolen or rained on. For those who live in big cities or high crime areas or have a front step that isn’t sheltered from the weather, this is a welcome and transformative step forward in being able to safely receive the items you order. Yet, in a world in which even Zuckerberg himself tapes over his laptop’s built-in camera to avoid prying eyes, what dangers might lurk in inviting web-connected cameras ever further into our homes?
